Pace ADA Paratransit

Pace selected UZURV, The Adaptive TNC, to serve as a back-up provider for ADA paratransit services in the City of Chicago and in those areas of Cook, DuPage and Kane counties where Pace provides ADA paratransit services to individuals who are unable, due to a disability or disabling health condition to independently utilize fixed-route bus and rail services provided by Pace and the CTA.

Currently, Pace assigns ADA paratransit trips to transportation service providers who have been contracted by Pace to provide origin-to-destination paratransit service within a specified service zone.

Launched in December 2022, UZURV is contracted as a backup provider for trips that occur during times when the primary provider’s vehicles are unavailable, when service demand is high and/or for passengers and/or at times and in locations best served by UZURV’s Adaptive TNC service model.

To learn more about paratransit services provided by Pace, including eligibility, areas served, hours of operations, and passenger fares, visit the Pace Suburban Bus Division’s Paratransit Information Page.

UZURV in Chicagoland FAQs

How UZURV Provides Service

UZURV provides origin-to-destination transportation with a team of credentialed and specially trained drivers who operate their own, personal vehicles – much like other Transportation Network Companies (TNCs). UZURV is also able to accommodate customers who need wheelchair-accessible service. Before providing trips, UZURV drivers pass a nationwide background check, a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) compliant substance abuse test, and must demonstrate knowledge of appropriate techniques for transporting people with disabilities and older adults.

How many passengers can UZURV accommodate?

In keeping with Pace and ADA requirements, UZURV is able to accommodate the ADA paratransit certified rider and up to two additional passengers: a Personal Care Attendant (PCA) and an additional companion.

Can UZURV transport children?

UZURV will transport children as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult who is at least eighteen years of age. In accordance with Illinois state law, children under the age of eight and/or measuring less than four feet, nine inches in height must be in an approved child safety seat which is provided by the rider. In keeping with UZURV policy, drivers are prohibited from lifting or carrying children, including children who are already strapped into their child safety seats.

Does UZURV provide rides to passengers with service animals?

UZURV welcomes passengers with service animals and has a zero-tolerance policy for any driver who knowingly denies access to a customer traveling with a service animal. A service animal must be under the physical or verbal control of its handler at all times and must sit or lie on the floor of the vehicle at all times. For more information, check out our Service Animal Policy.

What about mobility devices?

As stated above, UZURV is able to transport riders traveling in mobility devices. UZURV drivers operating their own vehicles can transport any rider who can safely transfer from their manual wheelchair or walker into the passenger seat of a sedan or SUV and as long as the mobility device can be safely stored in the vehicle’s trunk or cargo area. UZURV drivers can assist with the storage of mobility devices upon request. UZURV utilizes wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) providers for trips by customers unable to transfer out of their mobility devices and/or for people with mobility devices that cannot be stowed inside the trunk or cargo area of a sedan or SUV.

What assistance will drivers provide?

In accordance with Pace Suburban Bus policy, UZURV drivers will provide origin to destination service which includes door-to-door assistance when needed. Specific tasks that drivers will provide are listed below.

Drivers will:

  • Meet you at the curb or outermost door of the building where you will begin your trip.
  • Greet you by name and announce that they are your UZURV driver.
  • Assist you with boarding the vehicle if you request.
  • Open and close the vehicle door.
  • Provide assistance with the vehicle seatbelt and mobility device securement systems as needed.
  • Fold and store a walker or manual wheelchair in the vehicle’s trunk or cargo area.
  • Provide verbal direction to assist you in locating the outermost door of your destination upon request.

How does UZURV work as part of the pace ADA Paratransit service?

Pace will determine which trips to assign to UZURV. In general, any individual who is able to independently utilize ADA paratransit services provided by Pace (either on their own or with a Personal Care Attendant) will be able to utilize UZURV services safely and in comfort.
